A house will have a countertop cook unit rated at 5 kW and a built-in oven rated at 7 kW. Both will be connected to the same branch circuit and be located in the same room. What is the load used to calculate the branch circuit rating?
What will be an ideal response?
In this case, Note 4 to Table 220.55 will be used and states that if a single branch circuit supplies a counter-mounted cooking unit and not more than two wall-mounted ovens, all of which are located in the same room, the nameplate ratings of these appliances can be added together and the total treated as the equivalent of one range. In this example, the 5 kW countertop unit and the 7 kW oven are added together (5 kW + 7 kW = 12 kW). Now use column C of Table 220.55 to get the maximum demand in kilowatts of a range not over 12 kW in rating. Because the combined rating of the cooktop and oven being installed is 12 kW, use row 1, column C, which says that 8 kW is the value to be used for this combination.
