How did the adoption of Christianity affect the Rus?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. The adoption of Christianity in Rus in 988 created an alliance between Constantinople and Rus, which enhanced trade and also prevented the Rus from continued attacks against the Byzantine city. Because the empire was continually engaged in fighting to the north and the east (with the Abbasid Empire and later Seljuk Turks), it was seen as a concession to make an alliance to the north. Cyril and Methodius were sent (independently of the emperor) on a conversion mission to Rus to convert the inhabitants to Christianity, as previous reports of Rus behavior were shocking to both Christians and Muslims. The Byzantines had tried diplomacy and military recruitment, but each of these methods failed to provide a peaceful solution to dealing with the Rus. Ultimately, the Kievan Rus determined their own religious path and even developed their own liturgical language, Old Church Slavonic.
