Discuss the gate control theory of pain modulation.
What will be an ideal response?
In the gate control theory, pain is lessened by an integrated response that reduces the signal sent along the pain pathway. In the region where the noxious/painful stimulus is applied, the C fibers are activated. In this same region of the body, the mechanical rubbing of the site where the pain was initiated activates A-beta fibers to increase the activity of the inhibitory interneuron, which reduce the frequency of the pain signal transmitted to the central nervous system.
