A variety of literal questions should be included in initial examples. Literal questions ask for a specific amount at a particular time or the particular time on which a specific quantity was given. An example of a literal question is “How many points did Sarah score in September?” Questions calling for comparisons should be gradually introduced and eventually represent a greater portion of the total questions. “How many more points did Sarah score in September than in May?” is an example of a comparison question. Finally, questions requiring students to make inferences based on data from graphs, the most difficult type of question, should be included after students have mastered answering literal and comparison questions. “Why do you think Sarah scored more points in September than in May?” is an example of an inferential question. (Accept additional appropriate examples of each type of question.)
