Gossip includes both positive and negative things workers say about an absent coworker’s job performance, work behaviors and relationships, or career progress. Positive outcomes of gossip are that it can release tension or stress, act as a bonding agent, provide workers with needed information, and give additional insight into the organizational culture. The negatives are that it is often frowned upon by organizations, and it may decrease productivity. It also could be detrimental to the person being gossiped about.
