First, recognize the unjust social reality faced by members of minority groups and how such injustices and inequalities are inextricable form the mental health of minorities. Counselors from majority groups must examine their own multicultural realities; acknowledge that some members of society enjoy unearned privileges that are not available to all, and acknowledge their roles in perpetrating unjust and unfair social oppression of that minority face in society. Counselors need to understand the importance of respecting cultural pluralism as a critical step in multicultural competency. It is also important for counselors to decry the viewpoint that psychological and mental health problems have sole biological and internal origins, thus ignoring the unjust contexts that are implicated in psychological distress and mental health disorders.
