The scuole of Saint John the Evangelist was one of the largest in Venice. As such, they spent a lot of money commissioning art to decorate their headquarters. Their prestige derived from having received a relic of the True Cross as a gift. Processions were held on the feast day of Saint Mark (the patron saint of the city) and the scuoles marched in them carrying their relic. It was believed that a terminally ill child had been healed by the presence of the relic. This is the miracle that was painted by Bellini (Fig. 15.25).
