Describe the difference between a phoneme, a phone, and an allophone. Give an example of each

What will be an ideal response?

A phoneme is an abstract concept, an internal, idealized version of specific speech sounds. It is the mental representation of a sound. When we change 'cap' to 'cab,' we replaced the phoneme [p/ which changed the meaning of the word. A phone is an individual production of the phoneme. If we change the phone in a word, the word is the same but it sounds a little different. Allophones are variations that occur from production to production. Someone might say 'chawclate' for 'chocolate' but we still understand what that person is saying.
