Foods and other items related to human needs that a student finds rewarding, are more basic than secondary reinforcers, should be used only if the student is incapable of understanding more natural rewards, and/or other rewards are not effective. Teachers should check with parents regarding food allergies, nutritional concerns and other related concerns the parent may have regarding using primary reinforcers in the classroom.
