What would be done if you were to note that D.H. has a prolapsed cord?
What will be an ideal response?
• Immediately call for help and notify the physician.
• Glove the examining hand and insert two fingers into the vagina to the cervix. Exert upward
pressure against the presenting part to relieve compression of the cord. You might need to place a
rolled towel under the woman's right or left hip.
• Place the woman into the extreme Trendelenburg or a modified Sims position or a knee-chest
position.
• Administer oxygen to the woman by mask at 8 to 10 L/min until birth is accomplished.
• If cord is protruding from vagina, wrap loosely in a sterile towel saturated with warm, sterile,
normal saline solution.
• Explain to the woman what is happening and the plan.
• Closely monitor FHR.
• Ensure IV is functional; start IV immediately if one is not already in place.
• Prepare for immediate vaginal birth if cervix is fully dilated or cesarean birth if it is not.
