Explain the marriage gradient in relation to the marriage squeeze. What role does race play?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. The pattern in which women tend to “marry up” while men marry down is known as the
marriage gradient. When there is a shortage of men or women in the age group in which marriage
generally occurs, this produces a marriage squeeze. Highly educated Black women often have
difficulty “marrying up” because highly educated Black women outnumber women. The marriage
gradient for Black men is to marry white women, which contributes to a marriage squeeze for Black
women.
