The student should assert that one principal source of closed adoption is foster children. There were 423,773 children in the U. S. foster-care system in 2009, median age 9.6 years, 53% male and 47% female, most of whom were placed as a result of parent abuse or neglect. The average amount of time these children spend in foster care is 15.4 months. Most foster children are children of color. Only 49% of those in foster care are reunited with parents or principal caretakers. The easiest to place are ages five and under, but many leave the system at age 18 without a family. Many suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and social phobia.
