What important cultural considerations should practitioners be concerned about when conducting assessments of children with disabilities? Why should cultural background be an important part of assessment information?

What will be an ideal response?

Practitioners should consider many important cultural considerations in the assessment process. First, language is an important consideration. A child's inability to speak English should prompt an assessment in the child's dominant language. Other considerations include parent–child interactions, differing values, and beliefs of the family, and cultural interaction patterns that may differ from standard American interaction patterns. These cultural considerations are important because a holistic and comprehensive assessment cannot be completed if the assessment instruments are culturally biased; that is, they do not actually measure a child's true abilities.
