It is difficult to think of a case where humankind acquired knowledge and refrained from using it. To what extent should society restrain the efforts of scientists? What place do ethical considerations have in the decisions of science?
Science exists within society and culture. As such, society needs to debate and come to a consensus on issues of what we wish science to do for us. The benefits of science have been tremendous, and it would be the height of Luddite (one who is opposed to technological change; name derived from 18th century Leicestershire workman who destroyed knitting frames) behavior to attempt to turn back the clock to a simpler time. However, if ethics have value at all in determining right choices, what better place to apply it.
