How can proxy servers affect performance of the network?

What will be an ideal response?

Although proxy servers can slow down some requests for information, they can also speed up access to documents that have been requested repeatedly. For instance, they can be configured to store Web pages in a disk cache-a predefined temporary data storage location. When someone requests a previously accessed Web page, the proxy server can retrieve it from the cache. This lightens the load on the Web server, which doesn't have to serve up the same documents repeatedly.
