Discuss the causes and consequences of obesity.
What will be an ideal response?
There are several factors that play a role in obesity. Body weight is a result of genes, metabolism, and behavior. Environment, culture and socioeconomic status also play a role. Behavior and environment are the greatest area for prevention and treatment. There are only a few medical disorders that contribute to obesity- for example, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome.
The easiest way to interpret weight management is to think about weight control. Weight control is dependent on caloric balance. That is, to maintain a certain weight, calories taken in the body in the form of food and drink must equal calories expended in the form of body functions and physical activity. If one is gaining weight, calories taken in are greater than calories expended. If one is losing weight, calories taken in are less than calories expended. Genetics play a role in making one susceptible to personal weight gain.
The consequences of obesity include a decreased life expectancy and higher risk for certain diseases. These medical conditions include diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, gallbladder disease and stones, gastroesophageal reflux, gout, some pulmonary problems, and some forms of cancer. Much of this morbidity can be prevented or controlled by maintaining a healthy body weight.
