Contrast apparent and absolute magnitudes

What will be an ideal response?

The apparent magnitude is how bright it appears to us from Earth, and is determined by both the star's luminosity and distance. But with absolute magnitudes, we negate the distance factor by calculating how bright all the stars would be at a common distance of ten parsecs; this allows us to make direct comparisons of stellar luminosities.
