Summarize some factors known to influence mutation rates of genes. What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: If mutations can occur at any base pair in a gene, then larger genes are more likely to undergo
mutation. Some genes contain clusters of short nucleotide sequences called trinucleotide
repeats, and it appears that trinucleotide repeats may predispose genes to higher rates of
mutation. Other factors, including spontaneous chemical changes by alternate chemical forms
of the bases in DNA are also important. These chemical changes can occur spontaneously or
be induced by environmental agents.
