What is the difference between Piaget's and Vygotsky's views on the significance of private speech in relation to language development?
What will be an ideal response?
Piaget saw private speech as the result of cognitive development and indicative of cognitive immaturity. He called private speech egocentric speech and saw it as meaningless, not addressed to anyone, not modified so a listener can understand it, and reflecting the egocentrism of the preoperational stage of development. Vygotsky considered use of private speech a universal developmental milestone. He saw it as thinking and believed it guides behavior and fosters new ideas.
