Using Plate Tectonics explain the earthquake hazard in California
The Earth's crust is composed of about 12 major tectonic plates, and California falls in an area where two of these plates collide around the Pacific Ring of Fire. The North American Plate is moving west, and the Pacific Plate is moving east. The Pacific Plate bends or spins down as the North American Plate rides over this. We have a fault zone or a break or crack in the rock strata, with the most famous being the San Andreas Fall. The area is moving at least 1 inch a year. So as an alleviation of this pressure that is building up, you will have an earthquake where you have an energy release or an earth vibration. This should continue, as this is a problem that extends all the way up to Alaska.
