Why is it important to establish a good relationship with the gatekeeper and other people you meet while you wait to be interviewed? List several strategies you can use to establish good rapport

The gatekeeper (the administrative support person, receptionist, or human resources staff member) who must screen all job applicants can help, hinder, or ruin your chances of obtaining a job with the company. Because this person’s influence on your job search can be considerable, use good diplomacy when communicating with him or her.

Express respect for the employer, perhaps referring to its reputation for professionalism, reliability, or leadership. Find common ground in an effort to establish good rapport with the gatekeeper. If he or she likes and trusts you, you may learn valuable information about what it is like to work for the company and whether you will fit in. If it seems feasible, ask for the person’s help in arranging a meeting with the appropriate staff member. Indicate your awareness of everyone’s busy schedules and ask the gatekeeper the best time to contact the employer. Ask if you could speak with someone else who can tell you more about your areas of interest. Before leaving, thank the person by name for his or her time and assistance.
