The Virgin Mary was viewed as an intercessor who would actively participate in a person's salvation. Since the medieval mind was focused on the afterlife, worshiping the Virgin was a natural interpretation of church dogma. The fact that so many cathedrals were named Notre Dame, or Our Lady, is testament to the sincerity of belief.
