What is Chicanismo? Is Chicanismo similar to the Black Power ideology? Why or why not?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Students should discuss that Chicanismo was an ideology of the Mexican American protest movement that rose to prominence in the 1960s. It expressed militancy, impatience with injustice, and a number of pluralistic themes. Chicanismo is similar in some ways to the Black Power ideology on that it is partly a reaction to the failure of U.S. society to fulfill the promises of integration and equality. Chicanismo rejected traditional stereotypes of Mexican Americans, proclaimed a powerful and positive group image and heritage, and analyzed the group's past and present situation in American society in terms of victimization, continuing exploitation, and institutional discrimination. Activists saw the inequalities that separated Mexican Americans from the larger society as a result of deep-rooted, continuing racism and the cumulative effects of decades of exclusion.
