Describe how natural selection might operate to change the genetic makeup of a population of rabbits if a new, faster predator was introduced into their habitat.

Populations have natural variation in their frequency of various alleles. Interactions with the environment or other organisms may favor (or conversely, be detrimental to) individuals with certain genetic makeup. Those individuals may then show enhanced (or reduced) survival and/or reproduction. With the next generation, the offspring of that parental generation will likely carry more of those “favored” traits, and so on through generations, resulting in a gradual change in the genetic makeup of the population. When “faster” predators are introduced, the rabbit population will decrease at first until natural selection favors faster rabbits and the cycle begins anew.
