Discuss the current state of JSO treatments. What is typically used and how are they different from adult treatment?
What will be an ideal response?
Treatment for JSOs is dominated by CBT, RP, and psycho-social-educational models. Treatment targets are highly similar to those of adult programs, including offense responsibility, relationship skills, and victim awareness; however, adolescent programs are more likely to target family support, emotion regulation, problem-solving skills, and social skills. Adolescent programs also differ from adult programs in that they are more likely to include treatment for the client’s own victimization (85% of community and 93% of residential programs for males) and family therapy (85% of community and 95% of residential programs). Additionally, behavioral sexual arousal control treatments are utilized less frequently and limited pharmacological interventions are recommended for adolescent sex offenders, given the unknown risks associated with prescribing anti-androgens to pubertal youth.
