The medical student gets a nasogastric tube and begins preparation to insert one into S.B
Why do you stop the student?
What will be an ideal response?
Nasogastric tube placement is contraindicated in patients suspected of having a BSF because of
the potential for penetration into the brain. A fracture to the base of the skull often traverses the
paranasal air sinuses of the frontal bone or the middle ear, which are fragile structures; and the dura,
which is adherent to the skull, can be easily damaged in this location.
