Describe government spending on social programs in the United States.

What will be an ideal response?

Government spending on social programs continues to rise in the United States, narrowing the gap with social spending as compared to other Western democracies. The bulk of this spending was in established programs, particularly Social Security. In 2015, social programs cost nearly $2 trillion in the United States. Social program expenditures account for nearly one third of federal expenditures and approximately 40% of total public spending.
