A space frame is a truss-like, lightweight rigid structure constructed by interlocking struts in a geometric pattern. Space frames are essentially three dimensional trusses that can accomplish very long spans with minimal internal supports. They derive their strength from the inherent rigidity of the triangular frame, with tension and compression loads transmitted along the length of each strut. The simplest form of a space frame is a horizontal slab of interlocking square pyramids and tetrahedra built from aluminum or tubular steel struts. A tetrahedron is a polyhedron composed of four triangular faces, three of which meet at each vertex.
