Cognitive therapy focuses on correcting faulty ways of thinking. By changing maladaptive thinking patterns, therapists seek to help clients solve problems. The focus is on challenging ways of thinking and changing irrational thoughts and beliefs. People who are depressed, for example, tend to minimize their accomplishments and assume the worst will happen. Depressed individuals also tend to blame themselves when things go wrong and mistakenly assume that their problems are stable and global, that is, resistant to change. Lastly, depressed individuals tend to catastrophize their problems; that is, they magnify the importance of negative events. For depressed individuals, recognizing irrational thoughts, challenging them, and replacing them with more rational alternatives can decrease depression.
