Compare, in terms of effectiveness, the side effects and risks of the three classes of antidepressants: tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER:
Tricyclics are effective in 60-85% of people with depression. Tricyclics have side effects such as dry mouth, weight gain, constipation, and sexual dysfunction. There is also the risk of fatality if taken in an overdose, posing problems for patients who may be suicidal. MAO inhibitors are as effective as tricyclics, and may be as effective in treating severe depression as newer antidepressants. Side effects with MAO inhibitors include low blood pressure, liver damage, and weight gain. A major risk factor with MAO inhibitors is interactions with some foods and over-the-counter medications to produce a sudden rise in blood pressure which can prove fatal. SSRIs are as effective as the other antidepressants. The side effects of SSRIs include insomnia, nausea, sexual dysfunction, and nervousness. The major adverse effect with SSRIs has been an association with increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents.?
