Describe three alternatives that afford the defendant a pretrial release without having to post a cash bond
What will be an ideal response?
One form of pretrial release that does not require the posting of a cash bond is the release on recognizance; the judge requires defendants to agree in writing that they will promise to appear for all future court hearings. Another option used in lieu of cash is the property bond. Property such as a deed to a home or a title to an automobile might be cosigned to the court to ensure the defendant's appearance. Should the defendant flee, the court could take ownership of said property. Not all alternatives to cash bond take place in the courtroom. A police officer might be empowered by the court to issue a signature bond in traffic matters and minor misdemeanors; signature bonds do not involve an assessment of the defendant's likelihood of absconding before trial.
