Why is it difficult to fully erase data from a magnetic medium such as tape or disk?

There are two problems. The first is relatively straightforward and is software?related. When most operating systems delete a file, they simply remove it from the directory. The actual recorded data bits are still there on the surface of the disk and it is possible to reconstruct deleted files.
Another problem is hardware related and is due to the essentially analog nature of digital recording. When data in a sector is overwritten, the head may not be exactly over the track (the drive is intrinsically a mechanical and analog device). Consequently, some of the previous data will not be erased. This unerased data will be in a very tiny band to the left or the right of the current track. It is possible to recover data using sophisticated signal processing techniques.
