Explain how the natural greenhouse effect occurs.
What will be an ideal response?
The greenhouse effect is caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorbing and emitting infrared energy. Energy from the sun enters our atmosphere, is absorbed, and emitted as infrared energy. Greenhouse gases reduce the rate at which the Earth's surface loses infrared radiation to outer space. The portion of the infrared energy absorbed by the greenhouse gases warms the atmosphere.
