Heather damaged cartilage in her joint while exercising. She learned that she will have to wait a few months before returning to physical activity. Discuss why you think cartilage, in general, is slow to heal based on your knowledge of cartilage
structure.
What will be an ideal response?
Cartilage is an avascular connective tissue. Few blood vessels, if any, run through the cartilage itself. Oxygen and nutrients must diffuse from blood vessels in the outer sheath of dense irregular collagenous connective tissue (perichondrium) and through the cartilage ECM to reach the chondrocytes and chondroblasts.
