You begin your discharge teaching. Describe the information you will include in teaching.
Medication administration: Review method of action and side effects of medications and
demonstrate drawing up, double-checking dose, and administering correctly.
Diet: Patient should be able to resume normal feeding. It is important to note fatigue and limit
feeding periods if the patient is stressed.
Dressing: Dressing will be removed before discharge and covered with a bandage. Report any
bleeding, redness, or swelling to the physician. Keep site clean and dry for 2 to 3 days, avoiding tub
baths. Report any temperature or color changes to the affected side.
Follow-up: Make appointment with primary care provider as ordered to monitor weights,
catheterization site, and therapeutic effects of medication. Call primary care provider if there are
any signs of respiratory distress, decreased oral intake, signs and symptoms of dehydration, or other
concerns.
