What is case conceptualization? Describe the four phases.

What will be an ideal response?

Case conceptualization provides counselors with a framework by which they can observe, understand, and conceptually integrate client behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and physiology from a clinical perspective
Four phases include:
-Diagnostic formulation – gather as much information about the presenting issue as possible. Variety of assessment methods conducted.
-Clinical formulation – after information is collected, the counselor organizes the information into a meaningful manner. Look for themes and patterns to see how the issues were developed, how they are being maintained, and how pervasive they are in the client’s life.
-Cultural formulation – examine the role a client’s cultural background or factors play a role in the problems they are experiencing. Can examine factors such as race, ethnicity, age, gender, religious or spiritual affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and family background.
-Treatment formulation – establish treatment goals, select interventions, monitor treatment progress, and assess outcomes. Revisions to the initial conceptualization may be needed as additional information is uncovered or clients’ response to treatment interventions are evaluated by the counselor
