Compare and contrast the life of a serf with that of a peasant on a medieval manor?

What will be an ideal response?

There is relatively little difference between the two status levels, except that by technical terms, a peasant was free and a serf was generally obligated to remain on the land of the estate as a part of a permanent, fixed labor force. Additionally, payment for land and protection by the lord was made by the serf with his labor on the lord's demesne, while the peasant would generally pay in cash or goods. Finally, a free peasant had the legal right to bequeath belongings to heirs, whereas a serf would actually be transferred to the new owner of the manor when the previous lord died.
