Discuss potential methodology you could use to test the occurrence of false memory. Specifically, what kind of stimuli would you use?
What will be an ideal response?
Student examples will vary. A sample answer follows.
I would use the DRM procedure to test for false memories because researchers have used it for decades and because it is harmless for participants. Also, it is easy and inexpensive to administer and requires no special equipment.
My DRM-based procedure would be based on words and phrases familiar to students at my university. I would see if I could create false memories based on words such as "Sparty," "the quad," and "Skyline Drive." Then I would conduct a control group made of people who live in my community but do not attend my university. By keeping the stimuli consistent but varying the group makeup, I would be able to gauge how meaningful those words are to each group.
