The central venous pressure (CVP) of a patient positioned supine at a 45° angle with a jugular venous pressure (JVP) of 3 is

a. 2 cm. c. 8 cm.
b. 5 cm. d. 15 cm.

C
Information about the CVP can be obtained indirectly by estimating the JVP. To obtain the JVP, have the patient lie supine at a 45° angle. Then measure the distance from the patient's sternal angle to the top of the distended neck vein. This gives you the JVP. Knowing that the sternal angle is about 5 cm above the right atrium, take the JVP measurement and add 5 cm to get the estimate of the CVP. For example, a JVP of 3 cm is equivalent to a CVP of 3 + 5 = 8 cm.
