Onboarding, or socialization, is the process of helping new hires adjust to social and performance aspects of their new jobs. This is important to help employees adjust to their jobs by establishing relationships to increase satisfaction, by clarifying goals and expectations to improve performance, and by providing feedback, coaching, and follow-up activities to reduce turnover.
The following are the four steps in effective onboarding:
1. Compliance-understanding company policies, rules, and regulations
2. Clarification-understanding job and performance expectations
3. Culture-understanding company history, traditions, values, norms, and mission
4. Connection-understanding and developing working and interpersonal relations
