When examining the patient's face, if it is found to be round and swollen with characteristic periorbital edema and dry, dull skin, the patient most likely has a condition known as myxedema that is associated with hypothyroidism. In Cushing's syndrome, the patient has a rounded, moon-shaped face with red cheeks and excess hair on the jaw and upper lip. This disorder is caused by increased production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) or prolonged steroid ingestion. Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder associated with increased circulating levels of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 . It is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. The face of the patient with Graves' disease is thin with sharply defined features and exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs). The size of the thyroid gland is increased (goiter). Other manifestations of hyperthyroidism are weight loss, nervousness, heat intolerance, tachycardia, and sweating.
