Length: The teacher may present an exercise in which students measure the lengths of various strips of paper using paper clips as the unit of measurement. The teacher demonstrates how to measure the paper strip by laying the clips along the edge of the paper and determining how long the paper is in paperclip units. Following the demonstration, students are given the opportunity to independently determine the lengths of several strips of paper using paper clips.
Weight: Teachers can introduce weight measurement in the same way with a balance scale. First, the teacher demonstrates how the scale works, showing students that the weights on both sides of the scale are the same when the trays of the scale are the same height. Similarly, the teacher must show that when the weights are not the same, the side that is lower is heavier. Following the demonstration with a balance scale, the teacher introduces students to standard weights against which they can measure various objects.
Capacity: For demonstrating the concept of capacity, the teacher can set out a number of empty cups, present a water-filled container, and pour the contents into the cups, one at a time, to determine the container’s capacity. The teacher would then ask how many cups of water the container holds
