Allport suggested seven criteria that demonstrate that a person is psychologically healthy. What are they? Find examples of them in the case.

What will be an ideal response?

Allport thought that well-adjusted people:

1. Were motivated by conscious (as opposed to unconscious) processes (i.e., they were aware of their behavior and why they behave in the way they do).
2. Have an extended sense of self (i.e., they are not self-centered).
3. Relate warmly to others.
4. Accept themselves for who they are, even their faults.
5. Have a realistic perception of the world.
6. Have insight and humor.
7. Have a unifying philosophy of life (i.e., they have a clear purpose in life).

Grace is not as well adjusted as others. She seems to be motivated by unconscious processes. For example, she does not seem to be aware that she is critical of others and prefers to view herself as kindly. This is also indicative of her not relating to others warmly and not being able to accept herself as she is. Grace’s extrinsic religious orientation also implies some maladjustment.
