How a child performs on Walter Mischel's "marshmallow test" has been linked to later life skills. Describe the "marshmallow test", including what it concept it measures and what children must do to complete the task successfully
Provide at least one life skill at which children who are successful in this task may excel later in life.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The "marshmallow test" aims to measure a child's ability to delay gratification. During the "marshmallow test" children are given a marshmallow and a pretzel (or one marshmallow) and instructed that if they wait for the researcher to come back they get the preferred snack (or a second marshmallow). If they do not wait for the researcher, they do not get the preferred snack (or only get one marshmallow). Successful completion of the task occurs when a child is able to delay gratification of consuming the snack until the researcher returns. The ability to delay gratification during this task has been linked to higher SAT scores, higher social functioning, ability to pursue life goals more effectively, lower body mass index, and better coping mechanisms for stress.
