Ans: Response should include all of the following.
• Preteach math concepts by introducing key concepts and terminology that the student does not understand. Provide the definitions and place the words in context of the word problem.
• Model the completion of the problem by reading it aloud and solving the problem on the board. Ask students to repeat this process.
• Teach the following problem-solving strategies:
• Know—Ask “what do I already know about the problem?”
• Find—Locate the important vocabulary and numbers in the word problem.
• Set up—After reading each sentence, determine if the information is relevant to solving the problems.
• Solve—Solve the word problem.
• Check for understanding—Student asks and answers questions about what they read, as well as summarizes key ideas in solving the problems and checks if solved correctly.
• Once students can use these strategies, place them in dyads or small groups to practice the steps. (Orosco, 2014)
