Under Gorbachev's perestroika, the USSR stopped exerting total control over Communist bloc countries, which were then overthrown by popular revolutions. The same happened to the Soviet Union itself, as the several republics seceded from the Soviet Union. The Soviet military attempted to overthrow Gorbachev, but were thwarted by a popular revolt.
