Describe how macro and micro factors play a role in mortality and life expectancy.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but students should discuss that increased life expectancy and lower death rates are associated with macro-social factors. Examples include better public health, cultural and behavioral factors (e.g., stronger norms regarding healthy lifestyles), advances in medicine and technologies, and government actions (e.g., control of diseases). Mortality is affected by many micro-social factors, especially those associated with poor lifestyle choices, including smoking, failing to exercise, overeating, and eating unhealthy foods. Obesity has long been related to higher death rates from heart disease and stroke. In contrast, healthy lifestyle choices can lead to longer lives. For example, religious groups that restrict the use of tobacco products, alcohol, coffee, and addictive drugs (e.g., Mormons) tend to have longer life expectancies.
