What are think-alouds? How might they be used to assess struggling readers and writers?

What will be an ideal response?

A think-aloud involves having readers discuss what is going on in their minds as they read or write. An especially effective think-aloud for use with struggling readers is Mystery Passages. Using think alouds with struggling readers teachers can gain insight into the following:
• Readers' use of strategies.
• Readers' background knowledge.
• Readers' thinking processes.
• Readers' ability to integrate information.
• Readers' ability to handle difficulty words and confusing or complex passages.
