Explain the rationale for a profession's creating a code of ethics

Historically, the essential characteristics of the learned professions (education, clergy, law, health care) are self-regulation, a specialized body of knowledge, standards of education and practice, a fiduciary relationship with those served, and the provision of a particular service to society. Most professional groups develop a professional code of ethics to assist in self-regulation. This document's purpose is to bind a group of practitioners together. It expresses the aims and aspirations of the group; promotes integrity, dedication, and principled behavior; and provides guidance as to appropriate conduct.
