What two protocols are used in PPP to handle higher protocol encapsulation and connection control? Describe these two protocols.
What will be an ideal response?
The Link Control Protocol (LCP) is used by PPP for connection setup and determining which authentication protocols should be used. LCP is responsible for the termination of a link when a call or connection has ended. LCP works at the data link layer of the OSI model.
Network Control Protocol (NCP) handles the encapsulation of higher layer protocols such as IP and provides services such as dynamic IP addressing. NCP is capable of handling multiple protocols due to a field used to indicate which protocol is being encapsulated. NCP works at both Data Link and Network layers of the OSI model.
